Why now is a great time to start a painting business? Part 3

By Terry | September 14, 2009

continued from last week’s article…

4.  For small business owners increased unemployment can mean there are more experienced technicians and sales people out there who are available with more affordable salary requirements. I like this one because it’s a win-win.

5. Budding entrepreneurs with a solid plan who keep their overhead low; will find it easier to come in with a lower price for their services over more established companies.  Customers are always looking at every expense for ways to save, especially during an economic slow down.

6. The threat of recession causes some contractors who are “on the fence” as to whether or not to stay in business, to close up shop. In each of the past three years I’ve been approached by colleagues wanting to sell their equipment for pennies on the dollar. Their loss is my gain.

When you’re just starting out remember, being the new guy on the block can be an advantage. Even during rough economic times there’s still great opportunity for the person who hustles and understands the importance of providing real value.

In the beginning, turn those times when your business is slow into a positive by expressing to your customers how that benefits them. Explain that because you don’t have a lot of work yet, your focus will be on their project only. Be sure they understand providing high quality and putting in an honest days work is important to you. Make honesty and integrity your way of doing business, your competitive advantage. It’s during slow times more then ever that people are shopping for the best deal. That doesn’t always mean the lowest price – it means the greatest value.
