Why now is a great time to start a painting business? Part 2

By Terry | September 7, 2009

Continued from last week’s article…

2. Less competition from other start-ups still waiting for better times to come. Even if it’s slow going at first you can gain industry knowledge, develop relationships, and build a customer base. This might seem like a minor point but it will give you a huge advantage over the cautious ones, waiting for the economy to rebound before taking the plunge into self-employment.

3. Tighter lending standards during a down economy affect most businesses, but not a painting business. If you start small there’s little up-front money needed compared to other businesses. After all painting is a service business; your greatest assets are your mind and your painting skills.
When I first started, I printed up five hundred flyers and left them only at homes in need of painting, now that’s targeted marketing. The paint supplier I was working with provided me with all the equipment I needed. They gave me six months, interest free to pay. I had everything paid off in just two months because I brought in so much business. If you have five hundred dollars, a truck, and an unstoppable attitude you’re well on your way.

Part 3 coming next Monday…
