Why now is a great time to start a painting business? Part 1

Right now many businesses are feeling the weight of a sluggish economy. Unemployment is reaching levels not seen in years. Many hard working painters have put off their dreams of the day when they can stop punching a clock as someone else’s employee and strike out on their own. Continually waiting for things to get better and for the economy to rebound could be a big mistake.

With the right attitude and approach a success-driven painter can thrive in this industry despite the economic gloom. I was still a teenager back in the late seventies when, as now, the word “recession” was in the news everyday. I chose to ignore the “doom and gloomers”

I felt no matter how many painting companies were out there,  there was room for an ambitious guy with big dreams; a guy like me. Even though I was only nineteen years old, I wasn’t waiting. There was no way I was willing to be an average Joe. I knew in my heart by refusing to work for someone else and by starting a painting business of my own, I had a good chance of making all my dreams come true.

If you’re determined to own your own business, if you refuse to give in and settle for less, you too can live the life of your dreams. Here are six reasons why starting a painting business, even in tough economic times can be a good idea and a smart business move.

1. In slow times, more then ever, established companies focus greater attention on repeat and referral business. They’re looking for bigger contracts to keep their numbers high and their people working. Their business isn’t geared for the small stuff, and they focus less on bringing in new customers and more on their core customers. That leaves an opening for the little guy who can “fly under the radar” and go after the small jobs. Personally, I love small jobs; they round out short days, provide the highest profit margin and when grouped together they also provide steady cash flow.
