Wealthy House Painter tip #70
By Terry | July 20, 2010
Look for neighborhoods where it seems like everyone takes pride in their homes, their yards and their vehicles. Of course, target homes that are in need of painting work. Perhaps you can hand write something on the back of your flyer or business card like, “I will paint the trim on your home for x amount of dollars, give me a call.” The idea is to get started in a good neighborhood, and when you do be sure you put a job sign in the yard for all the neighbors to see. Homeowners usually feel better about hiring a company once they see your work because no one wants to be the first to try out a new business.

“It pays to advertise,” are wise words but who says you have to use money to do it? When I was starting out I had barely enough cash to pay for printing for flyers and business cards. After that it was totally up to me to figure out how to get my name in front of my ideal customers with very little money. Figure out where your ideal customers are and get as much face time as possible. Tell anyone who will listen why your services are the best. Focus all your efforts and attention on the areas you believe will give you and your business the most benefit. Be determined with your efforts. In time, word of mouth and repeat business will gradually reduce your advertising budget significantly, maybe even eliminate it entirely!

Sound advertising requires planning so before you spend a dime in this area ask yourself a few important questions:
- What are the strong points about my business and my work that I want to emphasize in my advertising?
- What do I need to work on?
- Why would the average homeowner who is my ideal customer want to hire my company over my competition?
- Why wouldn’t they?
- Who is my direct competition for painting services in the area?
- What are they offering that I’m not offering?
- What neighborhoods are right for what I do?
The more focused you can be at reaching your target audience the more time and money you’ll save connecting and getting your message in front of them.

Wealthy House Painter tip #67

Past job experience, a good work ethic, and knowing what you and your crew are capable of accomplishing in one day will play a big role in arriving at a price quote. Your quote must be low enough to keep a steady stream of jobs coming in, and high enough to keep you in the black. “In the black” is a term business owners’ use meaning “making a profit after all your expenses.”
This provides you with the time and resources to establish your company as being the best in your community and in your painting niche. In time you can create such a demand for what you specialize in that the majority of homeowners in your area won’t even consider contacting anyone else when their house needs painting. Companies that put the customer first never seem to run out of work no matter what the economic climate is.
