How to go from house painter to successful business owner Part 2

By Terry | June 29, 2009

Becoming a successful business owner means learning to leverage our time by hiring and training more people, and implementing routines and systems for turning out consistent, high quality work. Then leverage our money by utilizing faster, more efficient ways to apply more paint. Choosing to delegate rather than trying to solve everything ourselves, all while developing and marketing our skills to create more value for the customer in a shorter period of time so we can get on to the next project.

I’ve learned in my painting business (and I’m sure this applies to most other service businesses) that if you put the customer first, and develop a habit of doing what you say your going to do (and then maybe a little more) combined with good people skills, people will beat a path to your door to hire you and your company. I’ll never get used to the excitement exhibited by our customers once they see what we accomplish in one day. It’s one of the most rewarding and enjoyable experiences that anyone could ask for in a profession. In my case, through word of mouth and a few well placed job signs at homes we painted. We created such a buzz about our painting services that I had no choice but to stop painting, start delegating, and devote my time to running and growing my business.

Part 3 coming next Monday….
