How to go from house painter to successful business owner Part 1

By Terry | June 22, 2009

If you own and operate a house painting business, as I have for the past thirty years. You’re probably well aware of the love-hate relationship we all face. Starting out putting all of our time and energy into working “on” our business, only to fall back into working “in” our business at the first sign of a problem. If you’re anything like me you got into the business because you love painting. Working outside, doing your own thing, not answering to a boss, totally in control of your destiny. Doing something that you can take pride in at end of an honest days work. Something you can look at and say “that was all me” is a great feeling.

We love the freedom and get so caught up in the excitement and fulfillment of transforming a customers dull, rundown looking home into the sharpest house on the block that we lose track of time. We love it, but we hate it. Maybe we don’t hate it, but we soon realize that in order to expand and grow our business, our income, and ourselves (which is bound to happen if you’re passionate about what you do) We must put down our paint brush and trade in our painting clothes for a nice pair of jeans and a denim shirt.

Part 2 coming next Monday….
